Saltwater Pearls - Akoya Pearls
For those that love the traditional, the timeless, the classic
The elegant akoya pearl is the most familiar type of pearl to consumers and is typically showcased in matched or graduated necklaces.
These are saltwater pearls grown in the Akoya oyster or mollusk (Pinctada fucata martensii) in the oceans. They are usually cultured. Known for their shimmering beauty, akoyas are roundish, and their natural colours are normally subtle. The colours of akoya pearls range from white, cream, rose, gold to silver and blue/gray.
Keep in mind that akoya pearls with a greenish tint are not highly valued. While colour is a matter of preference, it’s the better quality akoyas of 7 mm and larger that are strongest right now. Farmed in Japan, China, Hong Kong and Sri Lanka, they range in size from the 2mm tiny seed pearl up to 9-9 1/2 mm. Minimum thickness of nacre should be 0.35 mm.
At the present time, China sells round white pearls up to 6mm for less than the price of Japanese cultured saltwater pearls.
