My Passion for Pearls
Many people over the years have ask why I have a passion for
pearls. To me, there is no gem more beautiful than the pearl. There is certainly no gem more elegant and understated. Unlike other gems, that need to be cut, faceted and polished to uncover their beauty, the pearl comes to us perfect and beautiful, a true gift from nature. Man doesn't need to do anything to improve it. Other gems, like a faceted diamond or ruby are dazzling and brilliant because of what they do to light. There brilliance most often is best seen in their face-up position. The brilliance of a pearl (its lustre) is different. It has a soft, quiet elegance. No matter how you hold or wear good pearls, they glow. They are moonlike and glorious. Even away from light they glow. And this glow has an intensity and depth that always mesmerizes me.
Pearls also have creative design possibilities unlike any other gem. Pearls are just not white, but come in an array of different body colours and shapes. They also have a variety of underlying colours which add to their beauty. Because of this, there will be pearls for everyone. I pick the pearl and then design something to show it off. Even a basic strand of round pearls can be worn in creative, versatile ways by adding a stunning clasp, or enhancer. They can be mixed together or mixed with other gemstones. The possibilities are endless.
Another great thing about pearls is that they can be worn anywhere, at any time, with anything. The old rules about what to wear at what time have been thrown out the window. South Sea and Tahitian pearls, once reserved for fancy dress, are being worn with business suits during the day. Freshwater pearls, limited, at one time, to casual dress, are now worn with strapless gowns. And even though pearls offer all these positive features, you don’t have to be rich to own fine-quality pearls. If you are willing to compromise on the type of pearls you choose, you should be able to find good ones to fit almost any budget.
